Today I was a brave little toaster! Against a Star Wars laser thingy.

And that's why I deserve the Rodney to the rescue icon. Cue the heroic music, Mr. Goldsmith.

Because OMG M and I went to the hospital (and I had not gone to bed last night At.All so I was wiiiiiiired) and, um, er, M and the doctor talked me into getting my right eye (the one that's still sorta, kinda functioning) lasered. The doctor told me that it was covered with many small holes (hee - I'm holy) and that he personally would not want another sun to set (okay, I'm embellishing) without doing something about it, because he said it could detach just as suddenly as the left one did.

Meanwhile, I was crying and shaking and scared. He'd said if I wanted it done, I'd have to make up my mind immediately, because the department would be closing shop for the day in a few minutes. OMG OMG OMG Pressure? Oh, of course not. There was NO pressure. /sarcasm

But M talked me into it, saying the doctor appeared to be majorly trustworthy. So we went to the room at the end of the hallway and I struggled into my coat because I was freezing (nerves and shock, dontcha know). I was so uncomfortable on the bed (hey, my feet didn't reach the ground), so he moved me to an armchair. And I was freaking out, because I think my eyeball was moving a million miles a minute. Don't ask me how he did what he did, because I thought I was twitching just too much. Hee - is there a laser faster than my eyeball? Anyway, it WAS over in a couple of minutes and I was left with a big black blob that eventually disappeared leaving me seeing everything in a mauve light. He said that would disappear in a little bit.

Anyway, if I want to go ahead with the reattachment of the retina in the left eye, I need to call before Friday and book it. It'll take an hour. After it's done I go home (to M's, so I'll get pampered), then come back to him to get the bandage removed. I was insisting that there was no way I'd have it done without being completely knocked out. But - huh - the doc said I wasn't the most intractable patient he'd ever had. WHAT? But, but, ::sputters:: I am the Queen of Outer Space. My freakout should be the biggest in the galaxy. Now you see why I like channeling Rodney so much. It's my nature to be bombastic, too.

Anyway, we were done and, as my reward for being SO BRAVE, M took me to Montana's for dinner again. I only had one beer, as I'd taken a couple of sinus pills after the appointment (oh, the pain in my face). M had ribs. Is anyone surprised? I decided to have a maple glazed salmon steak, steamed veggies and a baked potato with the works. We also had a free spinach & cheese dip appetizer ('cuz I had the promo e-mail). But, as I was fading quickly, we packed up our leftovers and M dropped me off so I could go inside and crash. Which I did.

I've entrusted M to call the dept. tomorrow to schedule the surgery (it'll be some time in February). I'm still worried - but then I wouldn't be me if I weren't. However, my eyesight will not improve - because nobody's touching the cararacts. But that's okay by me. All I want is the horrible pain in my left eye to stop.

Anyway that was my sorta, kinda traumatized but brave (dammit, brave, I tell you) day. I think I'm going to go eat my leftovers now. And, yes, I know I've said anyway too many times.

Brave Rodneyesque hugs,
H.

Laser eye surgery (not the corrective type so you don't need eyeglasses, the kind for glaucoma and re-attachments like the one you had) is very common here. As a rule they don't knock you out although they'll give you a Valium if you need it. Steve's late mom had one to break up glaucoma in one eye (in the other the macular degeneration was still bleeding so they couldn't) and she was so scared she couldn't talk. She was astonished that it was over in less than a minute and it hadn't been science-fictiony at all!

Lasik surgery is another story. No WAY would I have that after reading how it's done.

Glad it's over, and this Montana's place sounds awfully appealing. Wish I could go there with you sometime soon. :(

It may be a common procedure but STILL for me it's incredibly scary. After all, the rest of the body has lots of compensating factors built in (though, yes, I know ... if you have heart failure, there's only ONE) but an eyeball is an eyeball is an eyeball. Screw it up and you're toast - and not even the good kind.

And, yeah. :( and doesn't that look so South Park to you, too, but it would be great for you to join us at Montana's. Too bad there's no transporter thingy invented yet (and, yes, I know from the physics it'll never be, but still ...). My salmon was very tasty, even cold as leftovers.

Anyway, today, it seems that the arthritis has returned with a vengeance. The adrenaline had pushed it away yesterday (and I'd said so to M when we got to the restaurant) but now the body has returned to its default (ouchy) status.

And, now, I shall have brekkie.

Pirate (eyepatch wearing) hugs,
H.

I hope your right eye will be okay.

::giggles::

If I'm typing right now, it means I can see?
Right?
Right??

And colours are so much more vivid after dilation.

::eyes the fishies icon::
Ooh, look, psychadelic.

Thanks so much for the continuing hugs.
That's the wonder (the good kind) of the 'net: bringing people closer from thousands of miles and even a big pond away.

Hugs back,
H.

Yikes! I am very weird about anyone messing with my eyes, so I think you were brave brave brave indeed! *pets you and brings you a bagel*

[identity profile] helenkacan.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I was BRAVE (and using my Lawrence of Arabia icon to reiterate the fact).

::purrs and flexes the shoulders under the petting::

Um, is there red onion and good stuff with the bagel???

Greedy (Daffy Duck) hugs,
H.

*hugs you lots, and gently smooches each eyelid* You are very brave, lovely lass. I hope things improve, and that the pain eases.

[identity profile] helenkacan.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the warm, fuzzy feelings.

And, yes, BRAVE. Like Stargate heroes. ::points above to icon::

So, um, does that mean I can haz action figures from the 'gateverse ... while I'm recuperating? Oh, dear, I guess not. The piggies and froggies and catty-watties would object.

Pirate (eyepatch covered eye) hugs back,
H.

Aw, golly gee.
Yup, I were real brave.
I deserve a pony!!!!!

Don't you love my leap in illogic from point A to point B?

Trying-not-to-be-so-clingy hugs back,
H.

::laughs:: You deserve a pony just because you're adorable. For being brave, you deserve two. ::nods::

::huge hugs::

Oh, oh, oooooooh.

If I had two, then they could pull my Queenly carriage.
Or I'd have one for weekdays and one for Sunday Best.

Hey, I'm this silly and they haven't even given me the good drugs.

Very, very silly but sincere hugs,
H.
