So ... what's brought this on? Well, yesterday at church, after I'd finished my stint serving Communion, one of the ushers, Rob (who'd been in charge of the aisle on my side), waited for me at the table where we set down our stuff, then offered me his arm and escorted me (aka the blind old lady, lol) back to my pew. Yes, ALL the way to the first full pew (behind the front pew). That was so gallant of him, and completely unnecessary. But still cute.

And that got me to thinking about a what-if situation.

Since joining the church 21 years ago, I used to be quite involved with several social groups. I put on (mostly) New Year's Eve dances and at least one Halloween dance. But then the social groups dried up (for weird reasons). However, I believe it was a couple of years later, there was an announcement of a very special New Year's Masquerade Ball that was also going to be the wedding of Rob and Mary. At the time, I didn't know either of them and decided not to attend. And to this day I regret that decision. I heard stories that their costumes were simply magical. And, boy, what a way to celebrate your anniversary every year.

They are the sweetest couple who now just happen to live only a couple miles away from me. Brian and I bumped into them at the café next to the park around the corner one Christmas lighting ceremony a few years ago.

Anyway, that's my what-if that never was. Yes, I know that our lives are filled with thousands of what-if situations. At least this one merely leaves me feeling wistful. If there's any lesson to be learned, it's to do that one unusual thing, even if it seems too strange at the time. Considering how much I loved to wear costumes, I should have known better!
