I guess it was a logical thing for me to wake up early (uh, 5 or 6 a.m.), turn on my phone and check FB. When I did that, I found that Brian was at the airport in Nfld getting ready to return to TO after one of his iconic (large) annual family reunions. So I wished him safe travels. And then concentrated on my "chosen" family reunion later today.
The weather promised to be not too hot which was a good thing as we were attending a multi-block street festivel in Greektown. The roads were blocked off, but Jan, RS, and I managed to congregate around 12:30 a few houses south of our destination. Our first order of business was to find the roast quail vendor. As Jan had the largest vehicle (scooter), she was sent off to find the vendor. When she did, she corralled us to follow her. The lineup stretched from one side of the street to the opposite sidewalk. But it moved quickly, so we were served and back in a shady spot to devour our food. RS had chickened out and gotten lamb in a pita. But Jan gave her a taste pf the quail and she was hooked.
After that, we decided to get some roasted corn near us. Jan did the honours and we really enjoyed it. It was lukewarm with just the perfect amount of salted butter on it. I'd originally hoped to have watermelon for dessert, but we had no idea where that tent was, so Jan and I decided to get ice cream. The cones were made from spiralled dough pressed into a cup, then filled with warm caramel sauce, two scoops of ice cream, and sprinkles (I chose walnuts). Whoa. It was decadent and dripping and yummy. I'd been so proud of not dropping a morsel of quail or a kernel of corn on my clothes, but I'd made a mess, dripping ice cream onto my jumper at the knees. Ooey, gooey yuck. Good thing I was going to do laundry when I got home.
So, we'd spent far too much money (but didn't care because we had a blast) and the time flew by. We needed to retrace our steps and hope our vehicles would find us around 3:00 p.m. RS had her minivan arrive first and the driver said my bus was right behind him. What a relief. The driver remembered driving me before! When I got home, there was a dining table and four chairs on the front lawn, the first sacrifices to the remodelling job SuM and S. are doing.
I scrambled to my space, had another shower (even though the smoke from the quails is still in my nostrils) and did my laundry. I was totally zonked, reading for a bit, then lying on my cool bed in the dark. I'd checked in on FB so naturally church-John and the other Brian had silly comments about a white butterfly that landed on both of my knees while we were waiting. It must have been after the ice cream!
Anyway, time for my painkillers and some rest. It's church in the morning. Yay. And zonk!
